Tips for planning a kids birthday party

We realise that planning your childs birthday party can be costly and stressful - but also a lot of fun. So, we decided to chat to Miss Fancy Design, who have lots of experience in party planning and designing stationery for kids birthday parties. She shares some great tips, and also some idea's on how to cut down on sugar...

When planning a kids’ party, what are your top five things you recommend every party should have to be spectacular; whether purchased or DIY’d?

  • Cake Milestone Poster (especially for a 1st birthday). This can be used as a poster in your kids’ bedroom afterwards.

  • Activities and craft essentials (to keep them entertained!)

  • Decorations Balloon Garlands can be seen everywhere nowadays. Easy DIY tutorials on Pinterest (what is a party without balloons, right?).

  • Banner (can serve as a nice backdrop for photos).

  • Party favours – play dough is very easy to make and can keep little ones entertained for hours.

If you want to save on costs, what are some tips to DIY?

Party Favours: To help cut costs on party supplies I like to use take home treats as party favours. When kids see a bag with a super fun treat in it, they get WAY more excited than a bag filled with random things that are going to end up in the trash in less that 24 hours. A fun sugar cookie made at home ahead of time is always a crowd pleaser. It’s perfect because you can always decorate the cookies to go along with your party theme.

Activities and games: Pinterest is going to be your best friend. No matter the age of your guests, looking up DIY games, crafts or activities that go along with your theme is going to help you save money on your party!

Make your own snacks Buying pre-packaged foods to serve at your kids birthday party is guaranteed to eat up your food budget far more quickly than buying the individual ingredients and making it yourself. Awesome birthday party snacks include vegetables with dip, chips with salsa and guacamole, mini-pizzas, ham and cheese wraps, chicken fingers and bruschetta to name a few. Kids birthday parties don’t need to be about fancy food! It’s all about kids so keep it super simple!

With kids’ health becoming a topic everyone is talking about; what tips can you share with regards to getting a balance for healthy and sweet at a kids party?

Fill little tummies with protein-rich foods before the party so they don’t arrive hungry.

Drinks:

Diluted fruit juice, homemade ice tea (rooibos tea mixed with 100% pure fruit juice), water (still or sparkling) Consider providing mini-waters instead of individual cartons of juice for each child. However, if you want to offer juice, offer pure fruit juice with no added sugar or preservatives in a large jug, as well as jugs of water. This way, parents can control how much they want to give their child – the ideal balance would be 75% water and 25% fruit juice.

Sweet snacks:

Dried fruit pieces, fruit skewers, fruit slices, chocolate dipped strawberries, frozen yoghurt lollies (blend fruit and yoghurt and freeze in ice-lolly moulds), crumpets or pancakes. Sometimes just presenting food in a fun way can make all the difference.

Savoury snacks: Mini sandwiches, mini-meatballs, mini-quiches, biltong strips, cheese wedges, chicken strips, chicken skewers, chicken drumstick, mini hamburgers, mini pizza, homemade popcorn.

Example: Party Pack Items Improvements 50g packet of gums A small toy / piece of stationery 33g packet of mini cheddars 1 cup home-made plain popcorn 25g box Smarties 15g box Smarties 1 small Chomp 2 biltong sticks 2 Fizzers 1 mini Fizzer Total teaspoons of sugar = 20               Total teaspoons of sugar = 5

How soon to send an invite out before the party?

I would say no less than three weeks ahead to allow guests plenty of time to adjust their calendars and shop for gifts.
