JHB & PTA
Gauteng represents the spirit of South Africa, and in some ways a visit to the country is not complete without an introduction to the city of Johannesburg. It is the capital of Gauteng province and the largest city in the country; and is endearingly known to locals as Joburg, Jozi or Egoli (place of Gold). Indeed, mine dumps are never far away, rubbing shoulders with the fruits of its labour - shiny modern skyscrapers intermingled with 19th century architecture, Indian bazaars & African muti shops (where traditional healers dispense advice & traditional medicine). Johannesburg is the largest city in the world not situated on a lake, navigable river or by the coast (the only reason that it was born was because of gold). It is home to Africa's tallest building, the Carlton Centre.

Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton
New York has the Statue of Liberty, Egypt the Great Sphinx and Brazil the Christ the Redeemer statue. And Sandton, South Africa? We have a world-famous statue of the man who led our country to an equal rainbow nation, Nelson Mandela. Standing six metres tall and weighing 2.5 tons, the bronze Nelson Mandela statue in the Nelson Mandela Square was unveiled on the centre’s 10-year anniversary in March 2003. The unveiling also served as a celebration of 10 years of democracy in South Africa as well as the renaming of the centre from Sandton Square to Nelson Mandela Square. Dine by this statue, or stay right there in the Michael Angelo Hotel.
